Used Electric Cars for Sale in China: A 2026 Buyer’s Guide
Used electric cars for sale in China in 2026 span roughly $4,000 to $30,000 FOB, and the middle of that range — $12,000 to $18,000 — is where the value sits. Below it you buy limits; above it you buy luxury that depreciates faster than it earns.
This guide is about how to sort the market, not about paperwork. Five sections: price bands, the models that matter, battery checks, mileage realities, and what to avoid.
Where do used EV prices sit in China in 2026?
| Band | What it buys | Example |
|---|---|---|
| $4,000-$7,000 | City micro-car, 120-210 km | Wuling Hongguang MINI EV |
| $7,000-$11,000 | Compact hatchback, 300-405 km | BYD Dolphin 405 km |
| $11,000-$18,000 | Mid-size sedan/SUV, 430-560 km | BYD Atto 3, Song PLUS EV |
| $18,000-$26,000 | Premium sedan/crossover, 500-700 km | Zeekr 007, Xiaomi SU7 |
| $26,000+ | Flagship SUV/MPV | Li Auto L9, Denza D9 |
The $11,000-$18,000 band is the one I would point most first-time buyers at. Cars there are three to four years old, have 40,000-80,000 km, use LFP packs, and still have most of their service life ahead of them.
Which models actually matter?
BYD dominates on volume. The Yuan PLUS (Atto 3) and Han EV together account for a huge share of the used export pool, which means parts and mechanic knowledge are more likely to exist where you live.
Beyond BYD, four models are worth knowing: the Zeekr 007 for driving dynamics, the Xiaomi SU7 for hardware per dollar, the XPeng G6 for practicality, and the Leapmotor C10 for near-new value. All five are in our vehicle listings with full specs.
How do you check an EV battery without a lab?
Ask for a BMS (battery management system) report. Every Chinese EV can produce one at a brand service centre for 100-200 RMB. It shows state of health, cycle count, cell balance and max/min cell voltage spread.
- SOH above 92% on a car under 50,000 km: healthy.
- 88-92%: normal for 60,000-90,000 km, negotiate 5%.
- Below 85%: budget for pack work or walk away.
- Cell voltage spread over 80 mV: a weak module is developing. This is the number most sellers hide.
If the seller cannot produce a BMS report, that is information too. Any car sold through a legitimate Chinese dealer network will have one on file.
Does mileage matter as much on an EV?
Less than on a petrol car, more than people claim. An electric motor will outlast the body. But suspension, bearings, door seals and interior trim all wear with distance, and a 150,000 km Chinese EV usually needs $1,200-$2,000 in refresh work.
The mileage number to look at hardest is not the odometer but the charging pattern. A car with 60,000 km and 1,400 DC fast-charge sessions has a materially older battery than one with 60,000 km and 200 sessions. Many Chinese EVs log session counts; ask.
What should you avoid?
Brands that no longer exist: HiPhi, WM Motor, and several smaller names. And ex-ride-hailing cars, which are everywhere in the $6,000-$10,000 range and carry a 600,000 km regulatory ceiling. A 2021 Dolphin with 210,000 km and an orange inspection sticker is not the same car as a 2021 Dolphin with 62,000 km, even at the same price.
One more: do not buy a used EV you cannot inspect. Photos and a phone call are not an inspection. If you are buying remotely, use an agent who will physically stand next to the car with a scanner.
Key Takeaways
- Used EV prices in China run $4,000-$30,000 FOB, with the value concentrated at $11,000-$18,000.
- BYD models have the deepest parts and service coverage after export.
- A BMS report is mandatory — target SOH above 90% and cell spread under 60 mV.
- Charging session count matters more than odometer mileage.
- Avoid defunct brands and ex-ride-hailing cars.
