Used EV Battery Health in 2026: What a BMS Report Shows

by iamltlb

A used EV battery health check comes down to three numbers from the battery management system: state of health (SOH), maximum cell voltage delta, and charge cycle count. Below 90% SOH, above 0.08 V delta, or over 1,200 cycles on an LFP pack means walk away.

Sellers show you a dashboard percentage because it looks reassuring. That number is a state-of-charge estimate, not a health measurement. It says the pack is 80% full right now. It says nothing about how much it can hold.

What is state of health and what is a good number?

SOH is remaining capacity as a percentage of the original rated capacity, measured by the BMS from charge and discharge behaviour. A 2023 BYD Atto 3 with a 60.5 kWh pack reading 96% SOH still holds 58 kWh.

Good numbers by age: 97-99% under 20,000 km, 94-97% at 40,000-60,000 km, 90-94% at 100,000 km. LFP packs hold up better than nickel packs — a Blade battery in a Chinese EV typically reads 95% at 50,000 km against 92% for an NMC pack in an older European model.

Below 85% on a car under 60,000 km is a red flag. It usually means repeated DC fast charging at high temperature, or a car that sat at 100% charge for months.

What does cell voltage delta tell you?

The gap between the strongest and weakest cell in the pack, in volts. Under 0.05 V is healthy. 0.05-0.08 V is normal aging. Above 0.10 V means the weak cell will limit total capacity and the pack is heading for a module replacement.

This is the number sellers never volunteer, and it is the one that predicts failures. A pack can read 93% SOH and still have a 0.15 V delta that will throw a fault code within a year.

Do charge cycles matter more than kilometers?

For LFP, both matter, but cycles matter more. A cycle is one full 100% discharge equivalent — two 50% discharges count as one. LFP cells are rated for 3,000-5,000 cycles to 80% capacity. A 2023 Wuling Bingo 333 km with 1,500 cycles has used 30-50% of its rated life.

Watch for a mismatch between kilometers and cycles. A car with 25,000 km but 900 cycles was either used as a taxi doing short runs, or fast-charged constantly. Either way, ask why.

What should you demand from the seller?

  • A BMS screenshot dated within seven days, showing SOH, delta and cycle count together. One screen, not three photos from different times.
  • A 5-second DC charge test video. If the car accepts 60 kW+ at 30% SOC, the onboard charger and DC path both work.
  • AC charging confirmation at 7 kW. A failed AC path is a $350-$600 repair and easy to hide.
  • Winter or hot-climate history. Cars from Hainan or Dubai show measurable pack stress versus ones from Shanghai.

The Leapmotor T03 403 Comfort and BYD Atto 3 Champion 430 km are good references: both are common enough that a healthy car should read 94%+ SOH at 30,000-50,000 km.

What does a replacement pack cost?

ModelPackReplacement (China, installed)
Wuling Bingo 33331.9 kWh LFP$2,600-$3,200
Leapmotor T03 40341.3 kWh LFP$3,500-$4,500
BYD Atto 3 51060.5 kWh Blade$6,500-$8,000
GAC Aion LX Plus93 kWh NMC$11,000-$14,000

Compare that to the car’s price. On a $7,000 Bingo, a $3,000 pack is nearly half the value — which is why SOH matters proportionally more on cheap cars, not less.

Is a battery health report ever wrong?

Yes. The BMS estimates capacity from measured charge and discharge, and it recalibrates slowly. A car charged only to 80% for years may report optimistically until a full cycle. If the number looks suspiciously good on a high-mileage car, ask for a full 100%-to-5% drive test with the energy counter visible. That is the only hard proof.

Key Takeaways

  • Demand SOH, cell voltage delta and cycle count together, dated within a week.
  • Walk away below 90% SOH on a sub-60,000 km car, or above 0.10 V delta at any mileage.
  • LFP packs typically hold 95% capacity at 50,000 km; NMC packs about 92%.
  • A pack replacement costs 40-55% of a cheap EV’s value — check before you buy, not after.
